The murderer of Kemerovo resident Vera Pekhteleva, who had been raped and tortured for several hours, was pardoned by Putin. Human rights activist Alena Popova reported this on November 8.

The father of the late Vera Pekhteleva received a letter from the prosecutor's office, indicating that the killer of his daughter, Vladislav Kanyus, was pardoned by Vladimir Putin’s decree in April 2023. The Federal Penitentiary Service and the prosecutor’s office did not explain where he is now.

The girl’s mother learned back in June that the person convicted of murdering her daughter could serve in a PMC in Ukraine. According to social activist Alena Popova, Kanyus was already free in September. The family of Vera Pekhteleva found a photo of him having a BBQ with friends.

Vladislav Kanyus dated 23-year-old Vera Pekhteleva. After their breakup at the beginning of 2020, Kanyus locked Pekhteleva in an apartment in Kemerovo. For several hours he beat the girl, raped her and then strangled with an iron cord. There were 111 injuries on Vera’s body.

Neighbors tried to call the police, but they never arrived. In the summer of 2023, the court imposed suspended sentences on two police officers for negligence (as defined in Part 2 of Article 293 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), which led to Pekhteleva’s death. Kanyus was sentenced to 17 years in prison. He was supposed to serve his term in a strict-regime colony, but went to the war even before the session of the cassation court.
